ESA and National Insurance credits
« on: February 23, 2012, 06:52:29 PM »
While you are receiving Income-related or Contribution-based ESA, you will get National Insurance credits automatically paid by HM Revenue and Customs:

This will protect your entitlement to the State Pension and certain other benefits such as Bereavement Allowance.

This is great to know as I have read on the interweb that you don't get NI credits when on income related ESA, so it's good to have that refuted.

The credits you get, are for your pension and not for contributions based benefits.

Sofie,

That depends on whether the credits are Class 1 or Class 3, which in turn depends on varying circumstances.  The HMRC have a National Insurance Enquiry Line for more detailed information:

0845 302 1479

8.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday
Closed weekends and bank holidays

For customers who are deaf or hearing or speech impaired:

0845 915 3296 (Textphone)

Who knows I'm afraid. I've done so much surfing on this subject! If I ever find it again I will tell you and the website to change it!! Was very scared.
