Title: News of members and former members: by Deb (Devine 63)
Post by: devine63 on 15 Feb 2014 11:50PM
I finally heard from Tony (I came I saw I fell over) today.  He hasn't posted on Ouchtoo since Feb 2013 and I have heard little from him since then either - I gather he sank into another serious MH episode from the symptoms he showed beforehand.  I was relieved to get a phone call, but it suggested he remains pretty unwell, I'm afraid.  However it is good he has gotten back in touch.  He won't be online I don't think though.

Wanting to let people know about this made me think maybe a thread of news about friends and former members might be good: for example Mabel from the Dominican Republic remains in fairly regular contact with me, as does Becca...

Maybe there is someone who keeps in touch with you?

regards, Deb

For me whatever message board I am using tends to be the hub for friendships and if the meet up location goes then the friendship tends not to last. I still care about what is going on in the lives of my American friends but life changed so much since those good olde days we just cant go back and do it all over again.

I am happy enough about chatting to people via email etc but I prefer being amongst a group of people reading and posting on the board.

I hope Tony starts feeling better soon.

I have tried to Contact Burpy for a few years now. We used to speak daily then she sank into deep depression so contact got less and less.
Also Abe who last I heard was very poorly. I never even had my usual Xmas Card for either of them for a year from Abe and 2 from Burpy.
I am assuming Their time had come.
Anyone with news of them I would so like to hear even a PM would be great.
Thanks Frances.

I remember Burpy well.  She left our board to go elsewhere that she preferred didn't she?

Wobbling Wilma and Purple Cat are both alive and kicking on Facebook.

Quite a few people who did not like the idea of using Facebook when BBC Ouch Too closed have ended up connected to other old Ouchers on Facebook. I am there too but dont post much. They get pretty chatty and have a laugh around together so my Newsfeed quite often makes me lol.

I've heard that Yvette is very ill.  It seems that she has not been right since her hospital stay at the beginning of the year.  She has another large ulcer on her leg that refuses to respond to any treatment.

I'm not in contact with many former members.
Sociable Peter is busy, Hoss seems to be doing reasonably well.
I mostly hope that things are OK with those I haven't heard from in a while, I don't do facebook & not everyone uses e-mail.

I'm still ill despite the abscess having healed up (after months of visits from the District Nurses three times a week to pack and dress it).

I am now having dreadful problems with my asthma. For years, it has been under good control and I have rarely ever had to go on a Nebuliser. But this year I have been up to the GP twice a week for weeks and almost had to be admitted to hospital.  I even had to be taken up the surgery in my nightie one day as it wasn't possible to get me dressed!

I have been on steroids for weeks.  I have had to increase the use of the Ventolin (reliever) to several times a day.  The preventer has been changed to a stronger one.   My anti-histamine has been changed to one specifically for asthmatics.  In addition I have a nasal spray to use twice a day and Pseudoephrine tablets three times a day.

Plus, although I rinse my mouth after every inhaler use, I developed Thrush in my mouth - which I have had for two weeks. This week the GP changed the medication for that to a different one as the first one didn't work.  The problem is that my old preventer (and the reliever) are taken through a Volumatic Spacer but the new preventer is a suck inhaler (not aerosol) and that is the thing that causes the Thrush.  Joy of joys.

The hot weather has knocked me out and made me feel really ill.  Plus, I have to cover every inch of myself whenever I go out as the Doxycline which I have to take permanently because of the abscess, causes photosensitivity and I get burned to blazes very painfully.

Yet, despite all of the above, I did see Sir Circumference last week - who is very gallant to say I am on top form!!

I must tell you that Sir C is nothing like his ballet tutu picture.  Sir C is in fact slim and very good looking.

Strewth, Yvette, you have indeed been 'through the mill' there, and you're not alone in feeling the impact of the heat - assuming this caused the extra difficulties with asthma?

Great that you met Sir C, but I shall have a lot of difficulty un-imagining him as a portly fellow...

Hello Yvette! Sorry to hear your asthma is so bad... I prefer the aerosols and volumatic myself, and didn't realise the other types could cause thrush  >yikes<  I am lucky that my asthma is fine as long as I avoid the allergic triggers.  The hot weather doesn't help indeed...

"Any news of Mentalas (Pete) ?"

Well I was friends with him on Facebook and we used to regularly comment on each other's stuff. Then he suddenly vanished from my timeline. I don't usually even notice if someone does that but in this case I did, so sent him a message asking if I'd offended him. He said no and also said he hadn't defriended me either but was having some problem with his prescriptions. I left it at that, but if he sent me another friend request I'd accept it.

Deb gained weight because of her health conditions and medication.  Her medication was changed so she lost weight, but it didn't mean her health conditions had changed...

My goodness, you have been through it with your health, Yvette. I am so pleased that you felt well enough to let us know and to see Sir C.  Several  friends have had asthma and it is so scary. One of my friends is badly asthmatic. We did a college course together some years ago, she had to go home one  day because the air freshener the cleaner sprayed in the ladies set her off and she was so ill. You seem similarly affected.

Oral thrush must be agony. My son had it when he was a tiny baby.
Gentian violet is an extremely old fashioned remedy for thrush,  but it worked for him and it is still available, as it is very effective.
It did mean that we had a purple mouthed baby for a while. Plus purple stains on cot and pram sheets that never came out.  It didn't matter, it was the only thing that worked and he wasn't in pain.

Sir C., I have to rejig my mental picture of you now. This is not easy. The pink tutu is a hard mental image to remove.  >biggrin<

I may do a new slimline avatar, but I'll have to change my name.

I'm thinking of venturing into Facebook. I was forced to join a few years ago, when a friend's memorial was all being done through Facebook  >yikes< , but it scares me.

I used to get bonkers friendship requests from people I have known for years, and a colleague can't even fart without telling his Facebook friends about it.

Apparently, he says, it is my fault. I must have agreed to let him into my Facebook life at some point/ join his group.

Fb wanted to know such crap about me that I ran out of patience with them last night. I'm probably not the FB type / target audience.  >biggergrin< >crying< >confused<

I'm on Facebook, but only because there are a few clubs that I wanted to join and they only do Facebook.  Be very careful.  Whatever you write can be read by all sorts.  And I too get fed up with friends requests.  I never respond.  Every 'friend' can read everything you write and it stays there for ever more.  *gnashes teeth*

All the stuff that SirCumference and AuntieCtheM don't trust/don't like about Facebook are the things I like about it. The sheer randomness mainly. Friend requests from people you've never heard of/knew years ago but haven't thought about since then. I accept them all (except from one person I knew as a teenager and couldn't stand) and never defriend anyone (except, again, for one person, who got on my tits in real life).

All my settings are public. I don't keep anything on Facebook secret. Can't see the point of that*. If you're going to be on it you might as well really be on it. I did delete a couple of posts earlier this year (for legal reasons basically) but apart from that...

Now Twitter, although I'm nominally on it, I rarely look at it let alone post anything on it. I just don't get the appeal of that at all.

(*I suppose this comes from my journalism days. Even working for a local newspaper you learn that there isn't any point trying to hide anything. I was so shy when I started that I even considered asking if I could do it under a false name. But that got beaten out of me pretty quickly).

But having said that, there is an awful lot of crap on it. The attention-seeking disguised as making an important point stuff, the constant pity me stuff, the hectoring of those who don't agree with someone else's statements stuff. All human life is there, and I use it mainly for messing about on, so other people are welcome to write whatever they want as long as they don't interfere with what I write on it.

Indeed. Although I've only had two proper rows in my six years or so on Facebook. One with a guy I know from university who out of nowhere wrote a post about how people on benefits  shouldn't be allowed to have pets and the other with someone who I helped get work experience with at the paper a few years ago, after I posted a clip of dogs jumping on trampolines. Apparently the poor beasts would have been terrified and I was promoting animal cruelty. I told her that I'd never heard so much shit in my life. We're still 'friends' on Facebook but haven't been in any sort of contact since.

Some of my 'friends' on there do have views that I object to but that's up to them. Although I did call a friend of a 'friend' a racist a couple of years ago for going on about 'gingers' and dared him if he was so brave to write something similar about people with a different skin colour to his. Surprise surprise he didn't.

I just do not have the energy or interest in other people's random ramblings.  OK if they have something useful to say, which is why I am in a couple of 'clubs'.  I need what energy and time I have to cope with life in general, there is little left over to make work for myself.

Depends on what you define as 'useful' though. As far as I'm aware I'm under no obligation to read/like/form an opinion on anyone's Facebook ramblings, or indeed ramblings anywhere. Some things are entertaining or informative without necessarily being useful. And then again, some things aren't....

Aww, a furry cuddle.  Thank you.

I'm feeling very irritable at the moment.  Several times recently people have said things that have got under my skin and instead of just thinking 'prat' (or something less polite) and moving on, I've responded.

I feel impatient and intolerant.  I think a lot of issues I'd buried are surfacing, like what I perceive as generally (not entirely) rather a wide gap between mental illness/health communities and predominantly physically-impaired disability communities.

Part of me is irritated with both.  I want to set out the social model of disability in block capitals across sundry mental illness-focussed sites, and to scream in block capitals on (mainly physically-focussed) disability sites that in case they hadn't noticed, people with mental illnesses and impairments get shat on from all sides in terms of people's perceptions of how they behave or are likely to behave.

So there you go, I'm hacked off with the world and feel like saying to people "go shove it, I don't want to be associated with your attitudes".

I've a more than sneaking suspicion that when I'm like this, that's just how people feel about me...

So bear with me as I try to stay calm.

Wotcha Sunny, what you talk about above isn't alien to me, as a fellow mad person...I remember similar sentiments from others too that were posted on the old Ouch board over the years.  There might even be a good 'Talk' thread in the mix for when/if you feel up to it!  In the meantime, good that you feel comfortable enough here on OuchToo to be honest about what you're thinking and feeling  >thumbsup<

Those of us with both mental illness and physical disability (mainly invisible physical too) can be told off from all sides for being "not disabled enough" because... I'm not mad all the time, not always in severe pain and... oh bugger, the memory problems & fatigue ARE there all the time, so maybe I am "proper disabled" even if it is invisible.  >erm< >confused<

Sorry, but if you can't prove to me with photos and certificates that you are genuinely disabled, impaired, and generally buggered up, I shan't take you seriously.  My disability is higher up the heirarchy than yours*, so there!

*Well, it may or may not be, but it's important to establish that I'm more disabled than you when setting forth my views.   >devil<

As for the chocolate - if it's cocoa-impaired I don't want it.  Only fully-cocoa'd chocolate meets my high standards.  There are limits to equality.

More sad news. You may not remember that Yvette was saying that she has had a bad pain in her back for three months.  Well it turns out that two of her vertebrae have broken into little pieces.  So far there is nothing that the hospital can do about it.  So she carries on taking morphine.

Oh poor Yvette do pass on my best wishes. I hope that her pain can be managed. I have crushed vertebrae in my spine and before I lost weight was in constant agony but fortunately since I've shed 8 stone I only have pain when carrying weight or bending rather than all the time so a big improvement but I remember the pain all too well.

Hi,

I used to post on ouch as swift - I'm a wheelchair user, developed MH issues in 2009 and lost contact with everyone.  I recognise a few people.  I'm really sad to see that Deb passed away last Summer...I was at university where she was a senior disability adviser, and she was such a wonderful person.

'Repair your relationship'?  >yikes<  that sounds intriguing...

I have been stable for a few years now after a hospital stay in 2010 followed by a humungous depression that lasted into 2012 - now I've accepted (along with my family) that I can't be what I used to be before my two psychotic breakdowns, life 'in my head' is so much more peaceful.  Have found that I prefer a quiet life with plenty of routine and not too many surprises or drama!

'quiet life with plenty of routine and not too many surprises or drama' sounds like a great way to live, I'd like that!

It's a long story - I lost my v supportive GP, psych, CPN and support group, and had v shaky relationships with the new psych/CPN, so when things went wrong they went more wrong than they should have.  Trying to build some relationships now while I'm well, as in Jan it'll be all new GP/CPN/psych again.

Oh yes - before anyone gets the idea that I have some sort of idyllic life  ;-)  it's been carefully crafted over the past few years so I expose myself to as few triggers etc as possible, and can be somewhat limiting when other people are involved (though parents cut me more slack now).  The main thing is that I am left alone to mind my own business;  I have no wish to control other people's lives, just my own environment!

Strangely enough (as this is my first visit to Ouchtoo for a few weeks), I had an email exchange with Seegee in the last 24 hours. Dunno why she hasn't been posting but she has been on holiday with members of her family to Malta and is currently in the process of getting a new PA as her last one left recently and trying to keep her home tidy etc on her own is taking up a lot of energy.

And as for me not personally posting, I go through periods like that anyway but haven't had a lot of energy myself and a lot on. Nothing exciting, just stuff I've had to do.

It's not just that, but she does live over an hour's drive away and I go over to see her usually twice a fortnight (and sometimes more) so it does leave me a bit tired out the rest of the time. It's easier for me to go over there than for her to come over here, as she has two kids, a dog and a job whereas I have a cat and that's it.

Hello everybody. Relaunch? First I've heard about that,

When I saw your post I decided to 'announce' the relaunch quietly.

The forum itself is being redesigned and I am hoping for the relaunch to be this side of Christmas. There will be an option for existing members to choose to keep the format they are used to.
