Moomins!
« on: March 13, 2012, 11:02:52 PM »
On a thread in talk about something disability related moomins came up. I loved those books and even have one now. There is even a museum and they were on tv. They were written in the 60s and are um hard to describe, kind of small, fat and shy white hippos on hind legs. They are great! And need a thread of their own so here it is!

Did a quick search on moomins, i definitely wouldnt call them trolls. And they live in moomin valley in forest in finland. I am not and never have been obsessed with moomins. Honest ;-)

One of them is called Moomintroll - and I've never read any reports of humans actually seeing live trolls, so Tove Jansson's idea of what one looks like is as good as anyone else's.  If she says they are plump, have hippo-like noses, stand on 2 legs, have hands & live in buildings...  ;-) >lol<
I read some of the books as a child & enjoyed them; my favourite character was Snufkin.  Maybe I should see if my local library has any of the books to find out what they are like now I'm supposed to be "grown-up".  :-)

Friend brought back lovable troll from there.
He claims it found him when he crossed a bridge.
It was going to eat him for supper, but gave up that idea
when it realised he was five foot bigger than it.

I had a dream earlier. I dreamed something was nibbling my feet.

Mother and I have a moomin "thing" (it's kind of like our Gruffalo thing). She bought me a moominpapa for christmas and for mother's day she will receive a moominmamma card and a moomin tea towel... Previously she has received a book of Moominmamma's Thoughts.
 >lol<

I also have a friend with the entire set of Moomin mugs. There is a new one every year, and every year she gets it. She is 19. She has a lot of moomin mugs... Oh, and she has some mini moomin mugs to hang from the christmas tree!

The moomin paraphernalia is almost embarrasing. >erm<

Oh, I see - hadn't seen any of the TV series before but had read books many years ago.
The character who is called "Moomin" in the series is called "Moomintroll" in the books, his parents are Moominpappa & Moominmamma and they are all Moomins... I read that as moomin being a type of creature rather than a family name, but it could be either.   >biggrin< >lol<

Moomin is a type of creature. They're Finnish and I did all my PhD work in Finland. They're called Moomintrollen there (I think, spelling may be off), with MoominPappa being a specific Moomintroll, if that makes sense. I love them. Moomintroll is the translation from Moomintrollen.

I bought my nephew a fairly large Moomin soft toy when he was a tiny baby and it didn't help him with some people pointing at the toy and saying "Moomin" (which he liked and could say at that age) and some people saying "Hippo", which confused him mightily.

I brought back Moomin biscuits last time I went :)

My mum read them to me when I was a kid, I loved them and I love them still!

Downside to not having kids, no one to read too....
