Is that the sort of lobby you hang your coats up in?

Dunno, I never said it!

Ahhh, my gran used to call it the lobby... she had a verandah too, which would now be classed as either a lean-to or a conservatory. Since a child I have been very confused about verandahs for this reason.

I thought a lobby was an entrance hall where people met before moving into the main room, which could not have happened in my Gran's lobby, all three foot square of it. I was a confused child...

It's the entrance-area meaning that leads to the political meaning, though.  The area just inside a door, i.e. a lobby, is the area where, in political contexts such as the houses of Parliament or Town Halls/Council Offices or conferences, you can approach politicians to put your views across, i.e. to lobby them.

Unfortunately, the lobbying that goes on in ordinary house lobbies seems to be a bit lower-key of the "Would you like to buy anything from my catalogue" or "Would you like your windows cleaned?" variety, just spiced up by the occasional "Would you like to vote for me?" For some reason, the term to "doorstep" someone doesn't have quite the same tone, does it?  >biggrin<

I don't have a lobby, I have a shared landing.  I'm not sure I'd frighten anyone being described as part of a powerful shared landing.
(I'm an obsessive problem-solver, so feel free to ignore any suggestions or solutions I offer, even if they sound terribly insistent.)

If we're a powerful lobby, then I'm a powerful lobbyist, right?

Excellent. Can someone tell me where to collect my stupendous salary, please?

You can get some money from the DWP Darth. Apparently the papers say that all you have to do is fill out a form...

It's not that easy. You have to say you have a 'bad back' or 'depression' too.
