Channel 5 tackles the Super Scroungers
20-Feb-2013
Contact: Nicholas Caley

In this new documentary series (3 x 60mins) Channel 5 meets the Dole Kings and Queens who claim millions every year for housing and family support. Living lives of luxury that many of us can only dream of, these Super Scroungers are the poster families for everything that many people believe is wrong with benefits.

Are these people to blame, dedicating their time to getting more and more out of the state? Or are they merely taking advantage of an inadequate system that needs a radical overhaul? In Super Scroungers we’ll meet the people who make it their business NOT to work.

Last year it emerged that at least 100 families receiving housing benefit were living in luxury homes on hand-outs that could fund £1,000,000 mortgages. More than 30 of those families were being given £1,500 a week - more than three times the national average wage. Of the 100 families, 60 have their rent paid by the state to the value of £5,000 a month according to the Department for Work and Pensions.

Super Scroungers was commissioned by Ben Frow, Channel 5 Director of Programmes and will be made by Channel 5 Productions. Ben Frow, Channel 5 Director of Programmes said “This is a topic at the top of the news agenda so it’s the perfect time for Channel 5 to delve into the subject.”

"Scroungers in the spotlight

Published: 21st February 2013

BENEFITS scroungers who live it up in luxury at the taxpayers’ expense are to be put under the spotlight in a new series.

The three-part documentary called Super Scroungers was commissioned yesterday by Channel 5.

A spokesman said: “Living lives of luxury that many of us can only dream of, these Super Scroungers are the poster families for everything that many people believe is wrong with benefits.”

It comes amid outrage after The Sun revealed this week that “dole queen” Heather Frost is having a £400,000 council house built for her and her 11 kids.

Channel 5 has not announced when the series will air."

Expect this to be heavily hyped and publicised in the run-up to broadcast.

An encouraging number of people are complaining about this on C5's Facebook page:

The comments are scattered throughout the site, so it's difficult to link to them directly.

This is the contact form for Channel 5 if you fancy letting them know your views on this 'programme'. I certainly do. >angry<

I guess there be plenty about this in the Daily Excess as its proprietor (owns?) Channel 5 and it pushes its programmes.

Given the other 'reality' shows and mockumentaries shown on Channel 5 this is to be expected but still >angry<.

The fact that people volunteer to be filmed is mind boggling to me.

I find it mystifying too. They're either being lied to by the production team (told, for instance, that it'll be a chance to 'put their side of the story across') being paid handsomely, or they have a truly staggering appetite for fame.

I found this blog containing a letter which the author has given permission to be used as a template for anyone wishing to make a complaint to Channel 5.  >thumbsup<
